An effort to help a university roommate with leukemia was the inspiration for Pointcheck, a device to measure white blood cells as they pass though capillaries in a finger. The instrument may lead to at-home monitoring for patients undergoing treatment for cancer. The current approach for monitoring white blood cell counts relies on testing in the clinic or hospital, which can lead to delays in treatment.
